Gibraltar to Join Schengen Zone in Historic Border Deal by 2025

Spain and UK agree to eliminate land border controls, easing travel for visitors to the British territory from September 2025 onwards.

Historic Schengen Expansion to Gibraltar

In a landmark agreement between Spain and the United Kingdom, the British territory of Gibraltar will become part of the Schengen Zone starting September 2025. This breakthrough ends four years of negotiations and will transform travel to the iconic Rock of Gibraltar.

What the Border Changes Mean for Travelers

The deal primarily affects land crossings from La Línea de la Concepción in Spain, where approximately 15,000 people currently cross daily. Under the new arrangement:

  • Visitors entering by land will no longer face double border checks (currently required by both Spain and UK authorities)
  • The change applies only to land borders - air and sea arrivals will maintain immigration controls
  • Once in Spain's Schengen area, travelers can proceed directly to Gibraltar without additional documentation

Gibraltar's Unique Travel Experience

Known for its mischievous macaque monkeys and runway-crossing pedestrians, Gibraltar offers:

  • Walkable access from Spain across an active airport runway
  • Compact, picturesque urban layout with British charm
  • The famous Rock of Gibraltar with panoramic Mediterranean views

The agreement still requires final ratification by the European Union and UK Parliament, but marks a significant step in post-Brexit European travel policy.
